I learned about El Mero Taco food truck through a friend on Instagram who writes about the Memphis food scene. I tracked them down today at City and State in the Broad Avenue Arts District. I’m glad I did.
After perusing the menu, I decided to wait until I saw a few items appear in the window. Gawking at other’s food made my choice no easier. I ordered the Fried Chicken Taco, Chorizo Taco and Brisket Quesadilla.
The spicy brine of the pickled peppers penetrated the juicy chicken and creamy queso blanco with a satisfying heat in my first choice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️½
The sweetness of the butternut squash in my second choice perfectly balanced the fiery poblanos and helped me forgive the greasiness of the chorizo. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
My third and favorite choice showcased a flavorful slow-cooked brisket in a gooey jack cheese with just a touch of chimichurri which enhanced the quesadilla without overpowering the meat. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My only regret during this visit is that I didn’t get to try the Chilaquiles Verdes which features an egg fried soft over crispy house-made chips, warm salsa verde, Monterrey Jack cheese and Mexican crema to which you can add brisket, chorizo, bacon or fried chicken. I usually descend on runny yolk without hesitation, but the largess of the dish would have meant tasting fewer items during this visit to El Mero Taco.
There will be a next time.
